UPDATE: Husky Energy Oil Refinery Explosion

Details of yesterday’s refinery explosion in Superior are still being investigated. While there are some in the hospital with injuries from the explosion, what is important is that all employees have been accounted for.

Although this is a tragic situation, which easily could have been much worse, we want to take a moment to express our pride in the heroism showed by our members of Local 420 that were on site. The members of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) were at the forefront of the accident to help keep it under control. After the fire was thought to be extinguished midafternoon, the flames reignited during the late evening hours. The ERT was called back, and with the Superior Fire Department they ultimately put it out. Other members of Local 420 were also there to help the injured. Their care and concern for those around them is a true testament to the type of people we call our brothers and sisters.

As reported yesterday, Business Manager Mark Maierle, Business Agent Earl Matzinger, Superior District Director Addy Larson, and our labor leaders at the refinery will be meeting with the company today to try and answer questions that we all have. Assistant Business Manager Alex Tetzlaff and Business Agent Jake Kartes are tentatively scheduled to be there Monday.

We will do what we can to keep you posted.
